“We Change With Them” - Closing Celebration

The Oceanarium and Education Center, previously known as the Mount Desert Oceanarium, is hosting our closing celebration of Jennifer Steen Booher’s traveling exhibit, “We Change With Them,” on Saturday, October 22 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

The event, which includes a sneak peek into the Oceanarium’s renovation, is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

With the generous support of the Maine Humanities Council and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, the Historical Society created a traveling exhibit and speaker series to bring Booher’s 2022 Chebacco article, “We Change With Them,” to “Museums Without Walls” in the area, such as Schoodic Institute, ArtWaves, Naturalist’s Notebook, MDI Biological Laboratory, and Jesup Memorial Library.

“We brought the panels out into a wide variety of communities and reached people who

would probably never have thought to visit an art exhibit. I talked one-on-

one with elementary school students, bioinformatics specialists, genetic researchers,

climate change activists, biologists, historians, entomologists, and tourists.”

- Jennifer Steen Booher

All panels will be on display for an exhibit closing celebration at the Oceanarium, located on a marshy stretch of coastline in Bar Harbor.

The Oceanarium and Education Center is a new non-profit formed to reopen the former Oceanarium and expand its programming. As a science museum of the Acadian sea, shore and sky, the OEC will have aquaria, a large touch tank, an indoor lobster boat, a whale skeleton and other exhibits, as well as a marsh walk and museum shop stocked with educational and beautiful items. Educational programs for area schools will be a primary focus, in addition to programs for all ages on ecology, fisheries, ornithology, astronomy, and a summer science camp for kids.

“We Change With Them” is part of the award-winning Landscape of Change project, the Historical Society’s joint initiative with Acadia National Park, Schoodic Institute, the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, College of the Atlantic, and A Climate to Thrive.
