2023 Baked Bean Supper - Virtual
Recorded on Monday, January 30, 2023 on Zoom
Steve Bromage, Executive Director of Maine Historical Society (MHS), joined us at the 2023 Baked Bean Supper for a conversation about the importance of history to Maine's identity, well-being, and special sense of place. Formed just two years after Maine became a state, MHS has been collecting, promoting research and scholarship, and helping share Maine's story for the last two hundred years. Bromage discussed history’s importance to Maine; the spirit of collaboration between MHS, MDI Historical Society, and the MDI historical community; and MHS's preparations for its third century of service to Maine. The program also featured a conversation with Bromage and Raney Bench, MDI Historical Society’s Executive Director, along with the audience, on the value of history and “collective memory.”

Raised on Mount Desert Island, Porter Fox, author of “The Last Winter,” looked forward to winter and the myriad of snow and ice-related outdoor sports that came with it. This love of winter has taken him around the globe, exploring and playing among snow encrusted peaks, frozen landscapes, and glacial valleys. During his travels, Fox began to notice that winter was changing.
In the northern regions Fox explores in his book, the changes are most drastic, with winter decreasing by a month.
The Historical Society’s Executive Director, Raney Bench, moderated a conversation using questions from the public to better understand climate change trends taking place in the Northern Hemisphere.
