Cemeteries of the towns of Mount Desert Island

(updated 15 June 2014)

Welcome to the Cemeteries of the towns of Mount Desert Island home page, part of the Mount Desert Island Cultural History Project.

Purpose of this web page:

The purpose of the web pages linked to below is to present information about Mount Desert Island’s cemeteries, thereby updating the book Cemeteries of Cranberry Isles and the Towns of Mount Desert Island (see below). Corrections and additions to the introductory material in that book can be found here.

Corrections and additions to the main portion of the book are incorporated into the online posting for each cemetery.

On the pages linked to below for each cemetery, material in parentheses, such as (husb. of Lelia), is from information found on the gravestones or that can be deduced confidently (e.g., a man and a woman’s surname on a headstone with individual stones on the same lot that read “mother” and “father” suggests that the two persons are husband and wife). Bracketed material, such as [dau. of Henry and Anna], indicates information strongly suggested by the gravestones (e.g., adjacent stones of the same design probably belong to a husband and wife). Material followed by a question mark and enclosed in brackets, such as [son of Thomas and Releaf?], are educated guesses. All dates and ages are recorded here as they are found on the stones. Finally, the bracketed phrase [no stone] means that there is no stone for the person whose name immediately precedes the brackets, and the bracketed phrase [no stones] indicates the absence of stones for both persons whose names precede the brackets.

Lost cemeteries:

After the 2000 publication of Cemeteries of Cranberry Isles and the Towns of Mount Desert Island, other cemeteries came to light, and they are included in the lists below. However, there are other cemeteries that have been referenced in various sources, including the memory of older residents, but their locations are unknown. It is possible that some graves have been excavated and their contents moved to other cemeteries, but it is also possible that some burial grounds have become overgrown, the gravestones have become buried, and they are waiting to be discovered. They are reported at the bottom of this page.

How to contribute: All information (including images) should be e-mailed to erin.earlyward@mdihistory.org or sent by traditional mail to MDI Cemeteries, c/o Mount Desert Island Historical Society; P. O. Box 653; Mount Desert, ME 04660.

Southwest Harbor

Below is an alphabetical list of Southwest Harbor’s cemeteries. Click on any name and you will be taken to an entry for that cemetery. At the end of each entry is a link to information on the gravestones and other markers in that cemetery.

There are twelve sites with at least one gravestone in Southwest Harbor. Of the ten identified on the town tax maps (viewed on 10 August 2010), none is marked as owned by the town. The locations of the Dolliver Family Burial Ground (within the bounds of Acadia National Park) and the Doliver Grave (on private property) are not shown on the town maps.

Unmarked burial sites include:

Fernald Point – Gilbert Du Thet was one of two Jesuits and 48 sailors who attempted to establish a settlement in 1613, the location of which is thought by historians to have been Fernald Point. Du Thet and two others were killed in July of that same year during an encounter with Samuel Argall and his crew whose orders were to remove all French settlers. The three were buried at the location of the attempted settlement.

Flynn’s Point – “A man by the name of Michael(?) Flynn had a house at Flynn’s Point and was buried there, though no one knows the exact spot.” (from page 204 of Mrs. Seth Thornton’s 1938 book Traditions and Records: Southwest Harbor and Somesville)
